Born in Nanshan Village on Nov. 11, 1901, Chen Yu in his early years participated in the Seamen’s Strike of 1922, the Canton-Hong Kong Strike, and the Guangzhou Uprising. After the founding of the People’s Republic of China, Chen successively served as minister of fuel industry, minister of coal industry, secretary of the CPC Guangdong Provincial Committee and Guangdong governor, and was hailed as the “Son of the People of Nanshan.”

The Former Residence of Chen Yu is a historical site preserved by the people of Nanshan to commemorate this revolutionary predecessor. The building of the former residence is a three-room brick-wood structured bungalow, in front of which there is a courtyard. Covering an area of around 250 square meters, the building is 13.2 meters wide and 15.7 meters deep, and is surrounded by a brick fence.

The former residence was first constructed during the reign of Emperor Daoguang in the Qing Dynasty and rebuilt in the early years of the Republic of China. In 1999, The Nanshan District Government earmarked funds to renovate the site and established a bronze bust of Chen Yu in the courtyard. In 2000, the Former Residence of Chen Yu was designated a district-level patriotic education base by the CPC Nanshan District Committee, with the addition of the “Exhibition of Chen Yu’s Life.” In 2021, the Publicity Department of the CPC Shenzhen Municipal Committee designated it as a city-level patriotic education base.

In September 1984, the Former Residence of Chen Yu was designated a city-level cultural relic protection site by the Shenzhen Municipal Government.
