People who visit Raffles Shenzhen could also check some public artworks on a nearby small square, as the One Art 2022 is being held there.

With “Art Becoming Art” as the theme, the free exhibition features outdoor works by Liu Xiaodu, Hong Ko, See You Tomorrow and Xue Feng and indoor works by Daniel Knorr.

In Liu’s interactive installation “Solo,” the creator invites passers-by to walk in and read a poem. If the reader authorizes use of the recording, the reading will be played at the square in the future. “As a space where many people pass by and gather, the square displays the group image of the mass in the city. The installation gives opportunities for individuals to be focused in the crowd. The four-square-meter stage could be used by every participant for a solo show: Speak loudly, perform with emotion, live in the moment, escape from chaos and listen only to yourself,” Liu explains.

Sculptures created by Hong Ko and See You Tomorrow.

Mirrored stainless steel sculptures created by Ko and See You Tomorrow look like a pool of water marks and water droplets at first sight but when visitors climb to the higher floors of the buildings nearby, they could see the steel sculptures actually form the English words “see you tomorrow.”

Teng Fei, a member of the See You Tomorrow group, said creating sculptures like a pool of water marks was inspired from his childhood memory of rainy days; while Ko explained that the water droplet-shaped sculptures were inspired by the emoji “wow” to awaken people’s curiosity.

        Daniel Knorr’s “Calligraphic Wig.”

In a small room, Knorr is exhibiting his renowned “Calligraphic Wig” installation and the “Canvas Sculptures” painting series.

The concept of “Calligraphic Wig” is the discovery of a new “language” that is set in one of the most commonly used materials of our time, plastics. Language is in this case a metaphor for the form that the material gets during the circumstances of production discontinuation in the recycling process.

A painting from Daniel Knorr’s “Canvas Sculptures” series.

Derived from the “Depression Elevations” series, the “Canvas Sculptures” paintings add a new dimension to the work of the artist and the painting practice. To create the work, the artist starts in the studio by molding the surface of the canvas texture; Knorr places the canvas structure on silicone and starts painting on it. After the painting is done, the artist pours clear and colored resin over the silicone canvas. After the resin cures, it gets pulled off, pushed together and crunched by the artist, creating a three-dimensional painting structure. Inspired by modernist paintings, the artist combines different art-historical moments and genres.
