Chinese calligrapher Xu Jing, who has designed fonts for many renowned film titles and stage show titles, is exhibiting her unique calligraphic works at UPAVILLION.

Her background in graphic design gives her an upper hand in calligraphy writing. Her innate sense of space and familiarity with design lead her emotions and explosive power of skills to distinct renditions in her modern calligraphic works. She believes that calligraphy plays an important role in a contemporary society. Her cross-field collaborations with well-known contemporary artists, filmmakers and performing artists are constantly pushing the boundaries of a once-classic art form.

A native of Huai’an, Jiangsu Province, Xu holds a bachelor’s degree in graphic design from the School of Design at Nanjing University and a master’s degree in calligraphy from the Nanjing School of Fine Arts. Design studies have given Xu a unique perspective on the calligraphic structure. Decades of experience in calligraphy has lent her work an expressive freedom and sense of authority. Her fluency in alternating between the dynamics of cursive script and the decorum of regular script blurs the lines between the two.

Her works focus on an understanding and expression of the depth of human emotions. She channels her creative intent from the origins of the text to a formal calligraphic structure, as if breaking its complexity to exist in a more natural state.

Xu Jing has designed fonts for many renowned film and stage show titles, such as “Shadow,” “Rite of Spring,” “The Looming Storm” and “One Second.”

Xu has designed film title fonts for many movies, such as Peter Chan’s “Swordsmen,” Wong Kar-wai’s “The Grandmaster” and Zhang Yimou’s “Shadow,” to name a few. She has woven calligraphy into the photography of Christopher Doyle at the “Still Wind” exhibition at Lucie Chang Fine Arts in Hong Kong in 2015. In the same year, her works were featured in the UNESCO Cultural Seminar Enlivening Chinese Characters in Paris, as well as in the International Youth Art Biennale in Nanjing’s Jinling Art Museum.
