Eight Brazilian movies produced in the past three years will be screened at the Broadway Cinematheque Shenzhen this month at the fourth Brazilian Film Festival curated by Adriana L. Dutra and Cláudia Dutra, co-founders of Inffinito Brazilian Film Festival.
‘Through Ernesto’s Eyes’ (2019)
Plot: Ernesto, a 78-year-old Uruguayan widower living in Brazil, faces the limitations of old age, such as loneliness and growing blindness, which he thinks he can disguise. When a dog caretaker storms into his life and upsets his methodical daily life, Ernesto realizes that aging can be about rejuvenating with the intense company of a girl who is not even 30 years old.

‘Three Summers’ (2019)
Plot: Over a trio of summers, a caretaker for luxury condominiums relies on her resourcefulness and her eye for opportunity to take advantage of whatever comes her way as her employers are caught in major corruption scandals.

‘Dom Salvador and Abolition’ (2020)
Plot: It is a documentary about jazz pianist and composer Dom Salvador who was born in 1938. A busy studio session musician during the 1960s, Salvador played with Brazil’s best. He is credited to be the pioneer of many musical styles, a name in more than a thousand records and the leader of the seminal band Abolition. After recording only one album, he moved from Brazil to New York City in the early 1970s.

‘Amazonia Groove’ (2018)
Plot: This is a documentary revealing artists and their traditions, faiths and mysticism, music and life that pound in the northern region of Brazil. It gives voice to a fundamental part of the planet, extending Brazil and the world’s eyes to an almost unknown musical tradition.

‘Curral’ (2020)
Plot: It is a political drama set in the rural Brazilian city of Gravatá. During the mayoral elections, the population is divided between two parties, two political oligarchies fighting each other for power. A recent severe drought means water is the main bargaining chip when it comes to securing a majority of people’s votes.

‘Maria do Caritó’ (2019)
Plot: Maria is in her 50s and celibate by an imposition of the faith that was imputed to her when she was born: Her virginity would be promised to a saint invented in the same coin of the lie. Now Maria refuses this insanity and is trying to find a real husband.

‘Burning Night’ (2020)
Plot: The movie is an edgy, impressionistic chronicle of the nocturnal encounters of a Rio cab driver. It vividly captures the strange unpredictability of a rapidly changing world.

‘All the Dead Ones’ (2020)
Plot: The movie is set in 1899. The fates of the women in two families become entangled when the former land and slave owners request help from a woman of African descent they once dismissed due to religious differences.
